i am. hooking up

or am i? it seems as if everyone has a different definition of the term ‘hook up’ & its making things kinda complicated. some of you said it refers to making out, while others say it involves something more sexual. and some think it depends on whether you’re in high school or college & beyond (apparently college makes us more willing to have sex without strings attatched). so, i have an idea. let’s make up new terms to clarify this mess a little. oh, and while we’re at it, lets make a new term for “thing,” because who really knows what this means?

here is what i’ve got:
1.kiss up: kissing (making out with) someone you only have intentions of getting with once.
-example: “honestly, last night the only singles at the party were me and jim, so we had a random kiss up.”
2.screw up: having sex with someone you met one night and have no intention of seeing again (double entendre?)
-example: “last night i was so wasted that i had a screw up & i cant even remember his name”
3.friends with benefits (fwb): yes, i am aware that this term is already in use, but we need to start using it more often to clarify intentions (are we dating or is it simply just physical?)
-example “i’m going to my fwb’s house for the fifth night in a row. too bad he isn’t dating material.”
4.pre-ship: that weird phase before you admit to one another, and the rest of the world, that you’re dating.
-example: “we have been hanging out a lot for a few weeks, but are still just a pre-ship.”

these terms may catch on just as well as gretchen weiner’s “fetch,” but hey, hookup culture is super confusing. im just trying to make it a little easier with some new, more specific, terms. got any other words that we need to specify? leave them in the comments. we can figure this out together.
