i am. poor

personally poor, that is (my family’s money is another story).

i think most people realize that kids have more fun. maybe it’s because we can use “i’m still a kid” as an excuse for everything. maybe it’s because the world is still so new & we have endless options. maybe it’s because we have little responsibility. or maybe (just maybe) it’s because kids are poor. barely scraping by. making the most of every dollar. celebrating every surprise bonus. not working every second of every day for money we don’t have time to spend. making fun out of thin air.

tell me, when is the last time you had a good laugh? a genuine belly laugh? a spit-whatever-you’re-drinking laugh? a laugh-until-you-cry laugh? now, think about what you were doing in that moment. was your wallet involved? my guess is, probably not.

my best memories are when i’m surrounded by friends & family. dancing in the kitchen. playing euchre and texas holdem. baking cookies. most likely not at the mall buying things i’ll forget i have a week later.

i try not to let “bored” be part of my vocabulary, because there is always something fun i can be doing (& being broke is no excuse). yesterday, on my 13 hour car ride home, my family took turns blasting their music and laughing about the stupid new side jokes that arose during our trip (we may have come up with a new hangover restaurant idea and a new club, complete with chant and mascot – “go sheagles”). i have so much fun trying to creatively do things without spending money that i often think that our obsession with $ is silly.
